“Shunsai Imari” is a Japanese restaurant featuring Kyoto-style Obanzai cuisine in Kyoto. The restaurant is located in a convenient location, just a 10-minute walk from Kyoto's central Shijo Station.
Shunsai Imari specializes in Kyoto-style Obanzai cuisine. “Obanzai” is a traditional style of Kyoto cuisine that emphasizes using local and seasonal ingredients to create simple and flavorful dishes. It's a form of home-cooked food that reflects the cultural and culinary heritage of Kyoto. At Shunsai Imari, you can experience the essence of Kyoto's four seasons through traditional Kyoto-style dining while savoring a variety of Obanzai dishes in an authentic Kyoto setting.
At Shunsai Imari, you can find around 10 to 15 different Obanzai dishes available at any given time, all made with seasonal ingredients. One of their prideful dishes is the "Tai Meshi," a dish of sea bream cooked in a clay pot. They also serve various other Obanzai dishes, Dashimaki Tamago (rolled omelette), grilled fish marinated in Miso (Nishijin-style), and more, reflecting Kyoto's traditional morning meal. Additionally, they offer a range of dishes such as charcoal-grilled items, simmered dishes, tempura, Sashimi, dried fish, and Wagyu beef.
After enjoying delicious sake and appetizers, the Tai Meshi (sea bream rice) is highly recommended. Cooked individually in clay pots upon order, it takes around 30 minutes to prepare. The rice is cooked with Kombu (kelp) Dashi, salt, and sea bream broth, resulting in a simple yet rich flavor. This dish has become one of the signature dishes at Shunsai Imari, allowing you to fully savor the delicate taste of sea bream.
Ingredients referred to as "in season" have a way of effectively catering to the human body, such as cooling in the summer and warming in the winter. Using these "in season" ingredients results in flavors that are better and nutritional values that are higher compared to the same ingredients consumed during other times.
At Shunsai Imari, we take great care in delivering meticulously crafted seasonal dishes using ingredients that highlight the essence of each season. From well-loved traditional ingredients to rare finds, you can savor the unique flavors of Kyoto at Shunsai Imari. Furthermore, Shunsai Imari offers a wide selection of specially chosen Japanese sake that the owner personally procured alongside carefully selected ingredients. These sake selections, tailored to each season, encompass more than 20 different brands from various regions across the country.
Located within a renovated Kyoto Machiya building, Shunsai Imari boasts a serene and charming ambiance. The interior exudes an atmosphere of tranquility, maintaining the nostalgic charm of traditional townhouses. The space is tastefully adorned with a unified dark brown interior, a white wooden counter, and warm orange lighting, creating an elegant and refined Japanese environment. Shunsai Imari is not just known for its Obanzai cuisine and ambiance; it also allows guests to savor the beauty of Imari and Arita porcelain dishes, enriching the dining experience.
With a serene atmosphere throughout, the restaurant offers a variety of seating options including counter seats, table seating, and semi-private rooms, catering to a wide range of occasions from solo diners to group gatherings. Shunsai Imari offers dining options for individuals as well as the possibility to accommodate groups of up to 10 people.
